There's nothing like cucumbers fresh from your own garden. Here are some essential cucumber growing Q&A's to help you with a successful harvest.
Are cucumbers easy to grow?
Yes. Cucumbers are very easy to grow and quite easy to start on your own from seed.
How long does it take cucumbers to grow?
Cucumbers only take about 50-70 days to produce fruit from when you seed them.
Do I need to start cucumber plants indoors?
No. Cucumbers can be seeded directly into the garden after the risk of frost has passed. If you do start your plants indoors, make sure to do so no more than 3-4 weeks prior to your last frost date. Cucumbers do not like to become root bound and will suffer from transplanting if plants are too large.
When is the best time to plant cucumbers?
Cucumbers are warm-season crops that should be planted after the last frost date. In regions with shorter growing seasons, starting seeds indoors 3-4 weeks before transplanting can provide a head start.
Can cucumbers be grown in a pot?
Yes, cucumbers can be grown in pots, or in the ground. Choose larger pots - at least 12-18 inches deep and wide and make sure to water regularly, especially during hot and dry spells.
Can cucumbers be grown indoors?
Yes, you can grow cucumbers indoors. Varieties that don't require pollination (also called parthenocarpic) are easier to grow indoors. Monika and Muncher cucumbers are two varieties that don't require pollination.
Do cucumbers require support?
Not necessarily. Cucumbers can sprawl on the ground or grow up a trellis. I do a bit of both. Plants can be spaced more closely together when they are trained to grow up a trellis, which can be handy for smaller spaces and container planting. Good trellising can improve airflow around the plants which can reduce the risk of disease. It may also result in straighter and less-blemished fruit, but is not necessary for a successful crop.
Why are my cucumber bitter?
Certain cucumber varieties can become bitter during periods of stress such as weather fluctuation and prolonged hot and dry periods. Regular watering can help reduce the chances of bitter fruit, but your best bet is to choose less bitter varieties. I select and grow only "non-bitter" cucumber varieties. Which cucumbers are best for pickling?
Cucumber varieties that are crunchy and sweet with few, soft seeds make the best pickles. Monika and Cool Customer cucumbers are two varieties that are very productive and are great for both pickling and fresh eating.
