  • Start cabbage seeds indoors about 6-8 weeks before your last frost date, or direct-sow them outdoors approximately 2 weeks before the last frost. Bury seeds around 1/2 inch (12 mm) deep, cover lightly with soil, and keep the area moist until germination, which usually occurs in 7-10 days.

    Once seedlings are established, transplant them to a sunny location about 2 weeks before the last frost, spacing plants 12-18 inches (30-45 cm) apart for optimal growth. For best results, use row covers to protect young plants from flea beetles and cabbage moth caterpillars.
