Cape Gooseberries, the larger cousins of ground cherries, produce grape-sized golden-orange fruits wrapped in delicate papery husks. Known for their unique sweet and tangy flavor with a hint of tropical notes, these berries are perfect for snacking, baking, and adding to salads. Plants are also ornamental with soft, fuzzy leaves, and covered with latern-like fruits and can grow as tall as 3 feet (90 cm). Cape Gooseberries take longer to reach maturity than ground cherries, so may not be as suitable for areas with shorter growing seasons.

Cape Gooseberry Seeds
Start cape gooseberry seeds indoors 8-10 weeks before your last frost date. Press seeds into the soil and cover lightly, keeping the soil consistently moist until germination. If seedlings become leggy, they can be "potted up" with the stem buried to encourage sturdier growth.
Once the risk of frost has passed, transplant seedlings outdoors in a sunny location, spacing plants 18-24 inches (45-60 cm) apart to allow room for growth.
Physalis peruviana. Also known as Peruvian Ground Cherry.
