  • Columbine grows best as transplants but can also be direct-seeded in the fall. To improve germination, cold stratify seeds before indoor planting: place seeds in a moist paper towel inside a plastic bag or container and refrigerate for 2-3 weeks. (Cold stratification is not required for fall-planted seeds.)

Press seeds lightly into the soil without covering, as they require light to germinate. Keep the soil consistently moist, as germination can be sporadic, typically occurring in 30-90 days, though some seeds may germinate sooner or later.

After the last frost, transplant seedlings into a sunny or part-sun location, spacing plants 12-18 inches (30-45 cm) apart.
