Fireweed Seeds
Start Fireweed seeds indoors 8-10 weeks before your last frost date, or direct-sow them outdoors in early spring or late fall. Cold stratification enhances germination: due to the tiny size of the seeds, mix them with a small amount of moist sand or growing medium, then place in a plastic bag or container in the fridge for 3-4 weeks before sowing.
Press seeds onto the soil surface without covering, as light aids in germination. Keep the soil consistently moist until germination, which typically occurs in 10-20 days.
After the last frost date, transplant seedlings outdoors, spacing plants 18-24 inches (45-60 cm) apart for optimal growth.
Chamaenerion angustifolium
