  • Start Giant Red Oriental Poppy seeds indoors 8-10 weeks before your last frost date, or direct-seed outdoors in the fall.

Cold stratification improves germination. Place seeds in a moist paper towel inside a plastic bag or container, then refrigerate for 2-3 weeks prior to planting. Cold stratification is not necessary for fall seeding.

Sprinkle seeds onto the soil surface and press lightly without covering, as light aids germination. Keep the soil consistently moist until germination, which typically occurs in 10-20 days. Cooler temperatures may delay germination.

After your last frost date, transplant seedlings into a sunny location with well-draining soil. Space plants 12-18 inches (30-45 cm) apart. These drought-tolerant poppies prefer minimal watering once established.
