  • Start Prairie Coneflower seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before your last frost date, or direct-seed them outdoors in the fall. For improved germination indoors, cold stratify the seeds by placing them in a moist paper towel inside a plastic bag or container and refrigerate for 1-2 weeks. (Fall-sown seeds do not require stratification.)

Press seeds lightly into the soil and cover. Keep the soil consistently moist until germination, which can take 7-35 days. Germination may be erratic, especially with cooler temperatures.

After the last frost, transplant seedlings to a sunny location, spacing plants 12-18 inches (30-45 cm) apart. Following these steps will help you establish a beautiful display of bright yellow flowers with tall brown centers, attracting pollinators all summer long.
