Desi Summer Squash is an heirloom variety originating from India, known for its round, green fruits and rich, nutty flavor. This versatile squash is excellent both as a summer squash when harvested young, and as a winter squash if allowed to mature on the vine. When fully mature, Desi Squash develops a texture and flavor similar to spaghetti squash, making it a unique addition to your winter pantry. Perfect for sautéing, grilling, stir-fries, and pasta-like dishes, this squash requires no peeling thanks to its tender skin. Highly productive with compact, bushy growth, Desi Squash is ideal for gardens of any size.

*Days to Maturity – Ready for harvest in approximately 45-50 days as a summer squash; leave on the vine longer for a winter squash.

*Compact, Bushy Growth – Suitable for smaller gardens and container growing.
*High-Yielding Variety – Provides a continuous harvest as summer squash, with potential for long-storing winter squash.

  • For a healthy start, begin squash seeds indoors no more than 3-4 weeks before your last frost date. Squash plants are sensitive to becoming root-bound, which can lead to transplanting stress, so avoid starting them too early.

Plant seeds 1-2 inches (2.5-5 cm) deep, covering lightly with soil. Keep the soil consistently moist until germination, typically in 5-10 days, although it may take longer in cooler soil.

When transplanting outdoors, space plants 2-3 feet (60-90 cm) apart for bush varieties, and allow 4-5 feet (120-150 cm) between plants for vining types. This spacing ensures proper airflow and room for growth, leading to a bountiful squash harvest.
