Blacktail Mountain Watermelon is an excellent choice for gardeners in cooler climates, offering productive plants that yield sweet, juicy fruits even in shorter growing seasons. This heirloom variety was bred in the 1970s by Seed Saver’s Exchange member Glenn Drown. These watermelons weigh between 6-12 lbs (2.5-5 kg) and feature pink flesh that’s deliciously refreshing. The rind turns dark green, almost black, when ripe, making it easy to know when to harvest. With long vines that reach 6-12 feet (1.8-3.5 m), this watermelon variety will thrive in your garden.

Watermelon - Blacktail Mountain Seeds
For best results, start watermelon seeds indoors no earlier than 3-4 weeks before your last frost date. Watermelon plants are sensitive to root binding, so avoid starting them too early. In regions with longer growing seasons, seeds can also be direct-sown outdoors after the risk of frost has passed.
Plant seeds about 1 inch (2.5 cm) deep and cover with soil, keeping it consistently moist until germination, which typically occurs in 5-10 days. Once the frost risk has passed, transplant seedlings to a sunny location, spacing plants 3-4 feet (90-120 cm) apart with 4-6 feet (120-180 cm) between rows for optimal growth.
