  • For best results, start watermelon seeds indoors no earlier than 3-4 weeks before your last frost date. Watermelon plants are sensitive to root binding, so avoid starting them too early. In regions with longer growing seasons, seeds can also be direct-sown outdoors after the risk of frost has passed.

Plant seeds about 1 inch (2.5 cm) deep and cover with soil, keeping it consistently moist until germination, which typically occurs in 5-10 days. Once the frost risk has passed, transplant seedlings to a sunny location, spacing plants 3-4 feet (90-120 cm) apart with 4-6 feet (120-180 cm) between rows for optimal growth.
